Cardinal has UCLA Seeing Red

Sorry this seems to be turning into a bit of a Pac-10 blog, but the Pac-10 is the best conference in the country, and the one to which I have the easiest access, being based on the West Coast.

Last night’s game in Maples Pavilion was absolutely sensational, with Stanford overcoming a 17-point deficit to topple the RPI’s #1 team. Trent Johnson gets my vote for coach of the week after some amazing halftime defensive adjustments, to shut down Aaron Afflalo, and insistence on pounding the ball inside in the second half to keep Lorenzo Mata and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute on the bench with foul trouble. Surprisingly it was not either Lopez doing the damage inside, but wing players Hill and Washington. The 6th man club certainly helped, exhorting the crowd to its feet for much of the second half.

Stanford did wonders for its resume with the win, but the Cardinal’s putrid free throw shooting worries me about the viability of a deep run once they make the Tournament. But it was a tremendous win, and Palo Alto deserves to celebrate until Thursday.
