NCAA Tournament Bubble Teams – 03/05/07

by David Mihm | March 5th, 2007

Here’s a rundown of every team on the bubble and what it needs to do to (virtually) guarantee an NCAA Tournament bid. Teams are listed in order of likelihood to receive an at-large. Those listed as “Win Tournament” still have a chance at receiving an at-large bid with a loss in the final, but it’s no sure thing.

USC: Beat Stanford in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament. (probable bid anyway)
Villanova: Beat DePaul in the first round of the Big East Tournament. (probable bid anyway)
Georgia Tech: Beat Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament. (probable bid anyway)
Stanford: Beat USC in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament (probable bid anyway)
Air Force: Beat Wyoming in the first round of the MWC Tournament.
Michigan State: Reach the Big Ten Tournament Semifinal (beat Northwestern and Wisconsin).
Texas Tech: Reach the Big XII Tournament Semifinal (beat Colorado and Kansas State).
Syracuse: Reach the Big East Tournament Semifinal (beat Connecticut and Notre Dame)
Purdue: Reach the Big Ten Tournament Final. (beat Iowa and Ohio State/Michigan)
Xavier: Reach the A-10 Tournament Final.
Illinois: Reach the Big Ten Tournament Final.
Kansas State: Reach the Big XII Tournament Final (beat Texas Tech/Colorado and Kansas).
West Virginia: Reach the Big East Tournament Final.
Florida State: Reach the ACC Tournament Final.
Clemson: Reach the ACC Tournament Final.
Providence: Reach the Big East Tournament Final.
DePaul: Reach the Big East Tournament Final.
Arkansas: Reach the SEC Tournament Final.
Washington: Win the Pac-10 Tournament.
Michigan: Win the Big Ten Tournament.
Gonzaga: Win the WCC Tournament.
Oklahoma State: Win the Big XII Tournament.
UMass: Win the A-10 Tournament.
San Diego State: Win the MWC Tournament.
Georgia: Win the SEC Tournament.
Alabama: Win the SEC Tournament.
Mississippi State: Win the SEC Tournament.

Playing the Waiting Game

Old Dominion: Hope that Georgetown goes deep in the Big East Tournament.
Drexel: Hope that Syracuse and Villanova go deep in the Big East Tournament, and that the Committee recognizes the Dragons’ non-conference #5 RPI and #8 SOS.
Missouri State: Hope that the Committee has some sympathy for a year ago (and gives extra credit for beating Wisconsin on a neutral floor).
Appalachian State: Hope that Virginia, Vanderbilt, and VCU win their Tournaments, that the Committee recognizes the Mountaineers’ non-conference #7 RPI and #4 SOS, and notices that Donte Minter wasn’t eligible during two of App. State’s non-conference losses.
Bradley: Hope that the Committee decides the 6th-place RPI conference deserves a fourth team.

@ David Mihm. Is there a reason that Florida is not on this list? And would a split plus two SEC Tournament wins get us in?

John and Garrett — Notice this is dated March 5th, 2007. It’s from last year. I knew something was up when he said Xavier had to reach the A-10 Final!!

With a cupcake schedule and 8-6 in a really weak SEC. Florida had its chances many times (LSU, MS State, etc). One good win doesn’t mean anything.

Florida only has 3 top 100 RPI wins. If that cuts it this year, then I really have to question the integrity of the Selection Committee.
