What an exciting and great year for long-suffering fans of Drake basketball. I was also at DU when they went to the Final 4 in '69. In fact, I attended the games in Louisville's Freedom Hall that year. It would be the greatest opportunity in the world for the Doggies to beat WKentucky and then CT and then get to play UCLA in round 3. It was Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul Jabbar) and his teammates who ousted Drake in the semi-finals that year. We always complain about the non-call on Dolph Pulliam when he put a rebound in with 5 seonds left putting us 1 pt behind and he was fouled badly but no call. Poetic justice would be to somehow beat the Uclans. But I'm smokin' the funny stuff if I really think that's possible.

Let us assume Drake wins their first round game, in which they will be heavily favored. The real test will be against the other 4 or 5 seed in their regional. Drake could get any of the following teams: Pittsburgh, Purdue, UConn, or Washington State.

Who would you most like to play? Do you think these will be tough, winnable games?

It would be appropriate for Drake University, out of Des Moines, Iowa, to change there mascot from a Bulldog, to an Underdog. However, it is exactly what they want. As sports analyst across the nation overlook the Dogs, they are forgetting one thing about their style of play, which can keep them in absolutely any game. They spread the floor on offense and hit deep shots while making the right desicion. Also, they play scrappy defense despite being undersized. It is such a style of play that coaches have a diffucult time preparing for. Thus Drake's formula of play equals success.

@ McBulldog

New to the Drake program?

I think the nation is "new" to the Drake program.

Drake is fun to watch and plays to their capability every night. An analyst I talked with at the Valley Tournament summed them up nicely, "Parents should show their kids Drake basketball."

Their unselfishness is incredible and their team shooting is gorgeous.

That said it would take several small miracles to get the Dogs into the Final Four.

After offering my opinion, who am I to tell Drake the can't? This team has more than unity. A glow encompasses these guys this year and no one knows the limits of their specialness.

Great analysis of the team. I think they will go to the Sweet 16. After that, it all depends on match-ups. If they meet a top team such as Duke, Tennessee, or even Memphis I think it will be a classic game and they have a chance. I think if they play a team like UCLA, North Carolina, or Kansas, they will be in a very difficult situation. Anyway it turns out, The Drake is a team to celebrate.

And, I grew up listening to games of The Drake on the radio because my Mom and Dad went there. I well remember the late 60's, three MVC titles in a row, and a final four appearance. Drake was George Mason before George Mason was.

GO BULLDOGS!

My wife and I were Drake students in 1969 when they went to the Final Four. I doubt this team will make it that far but I think you've underrated them. I say they make it to Elite Eight.

One and done? You must be new to the Drake program. Some of what you write is spot on and a lot of what you write is not. Just a little more home work would do your coverage of the Dogs justice but hey .. who am I, right?
You don't think a win at Butler is a "Key Win"?
If you are really from Central Illinois you should be ashamed of yourself. Maybe I should become a "freelance writer" .. does it actually pay anything? LOL!
You have a nice little site here and good luck.
